How long have you been shooting pro?
I have been shooting pro since the very first time I took photos of people. May 2005. Jumped in headfirst from the get-go.
Describe your education & training in photography.
My training is the school of hard knocks. The way I learned was I contacted photographers who I liked and picked their brains. I took a little advice from all. I then just started doing what I loved and learned, more times than not, by failure.
What challenges did you face early in your career?
Finding my niche. Creating a style and brand.
What is your secret to balancing your
photography business and your personal life?
The secret is photography comes 2nd to my family and self for that matter. Have fun keep it simple.
Define your photography style.
I would describe my style as portrait journalistic. It appears that much of my work is candid yet almost all shots are created. I developed it by reading books on photography, and finding others who inspired me. Then from there, just get out and do it. It will come.
What inspires you artistically (a person, place, movie,
you name it!)?
The thing that inspires me artistically is comedy. I watch tons of comedy and learn new jokes. I like to keep my clients smiling and cracking up most of the time.
When going into a session, what motivates you?
What motivates me is when I have a client who has no requests from me other than:“Do whatcha do.” As a painter, it’s great to start off with a canvas that doesn’t “make requests.”
When working with your clients, how do you evoke the
perfect expression
and pose?
Well posing is different with everyone. If it’s a couple I often have them close there eyes and just feel each other for a bit, and then go from there. As they start feeling comfortable this is when the jokes come out to get them comfortable with me as well.
What business tip would you give the new photographer?
Learn business. You’re doing photography because you love photography. But you will not make it as a photographer if you do not understand business.
